Meva's crowning glory

Meva’s crowning glory

| On 27, Mar 2017

Mevagissey ‘D’ clinched the Rees League title at Gorran with a 4-1 victory which could only be matched by nearest rivals Tregonissey ‘B’ for the Meva boys to win the title by the odd point.

Lee McKinstry beat Rob Blamey in the opener to get Gorran off to a good start but there was big wins for George Lory, Ian Latham, Rich Lakeman and Mark Ashton who knocked in breaks of 40 and 36 when defeating Andy Reddall as the Meva boys celebrated.

Treggy ‘B’ needed a full hand against Bethel ‘D’ to have any chance of the title and Phil Hooley’s 30 break closely followed by son Justin’s win put them 2-0 up. but Andy Spearman beat Simon Garrington in the third frame to knock them back. Mike Hooley and Richard Opie completed a 4-1 win but they came up just short after a very good season.

Bethel ‘C’ were pushed all the way by the ladies of Tregonissey ‘C’ but got through by the odd frame. Great wins for Michaela Edwards and Stacey Hancock over Courtney Crockford and Leigh Rosevear had put them two up but Roger Smithson and Ben Stunnell followed up the earlier win for Howard Brett for Bethel to squeeze home.

Lerryn jumped up a couple of places in the league thanks to a great 4-1 win at St Stephen ‘B’. James Stephens, Charles McMiram, Terry Middleton and John Hancock were the winners with Terry Nicholls getting past Graham Hoskin for the home point.

Runners up spot in the Victory League will go to the wire with Bugle ‘A’ needing four points at Mevagissey ‘A’ last night to claim second place.

Bethel ‘A’ went two down at home to Pelynt as John Daniell and Len Flower hammered Geoff Hawken and Gary Stephens with John having a 27 clearance for the second week running, but Bethel dug in and responded with wins for Matt Green and Andy Peers leaving Leon Collard’s black ball win over Phil Ormand getting the victory.

Adrian Bowyer’s great win over Nigel Couchman stopped Bugle ‘A’s full house against St Stephen. Big wins for Gary Spencer, Paul Sturtidge, Andrew Best and Ian Ball leaves Bugle knowing exactly what they needed last night with Bethel’s campaign completed.

Bugle ‘B’s 3-2 win at St Neot condemned Mevagissey ‘B’ to the Rees League. Steve Courts took the opener beating Keith Moore but Mark Sturtridge and Dave Rundle put Bethel in the lead. Darren Lock levelled things up beating Colin Rundle only for Tony Conroy to hammer Chris Perring in the last for a good victory.

Paul Williams’ 40 and Jame Popplewell’s 39 breaks helped Mevagissey ‘A’ get a good 3-2 win at St Blazey ‘A’. Phil Staley got Meva’s other point with Stewart Dewings and Nick Kendall replying.
